La città è ubicata nella zona di un antico insediamento celtico chiamato mwfwArrubium, le cui rovine sono tuttora in parte visibili.

Măcin ha dato i natali al geologo e mineralogista Gheorghe Munteanu Murgoci (mwgg1872-mwgw1925).
